The utilitarianism principle is commonly thought of as the basis behind making morally good decisions or acting to create the greatest happiness for the greatest amount of people. John Stuart Mill’s basic principle of utilitarianism is usually referred to as the â€Å"greatest-happiness principle† because of this (Mill, 7). According to Tennessee’s correctional facilities website, it costs about $65 to keep an inmate in jail for one day. In the terms of having the highest intensity or integrity of happiness, education can lead to higher earning, fewer crime problems, etc. Mill discloses to the reader how to distinguish between quality pleasures (higher and lower). If people would choose the pleasure over a different pleasure even if it comes with minor pain or discomfort, it can be considered a higher pleasure. It is also of higher quality if they wouldn’t trade it for more of the other pleasure. Continuing, it is incontestable that given equal opportunity to receive the opportunities and pleasures, people will choose those that appeal to their higher faculties, for example someo ne who has received an education will not choose to become uneducated and therefore ignorant (p 10). If he had not run away the men who wanted to court with Miss Emily, she may have not gone insane. Miss Emily may have wanted to be alone, but her heart longed for a companion. Her yearning for true love and having a companion drove her to kill Homer Baron. She knew just what she planned to do when she purchased the arsenic poison. â€Å"Then we noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head† (35). Her most deep feelings and longing for a companion were lying in her bed. Miss Emily’s pride resulted in the shocking murder of Homer Baron. Miss Emily’s life was completely destroyed by her father’s overprotective ways and love. The unbearable years of torture is what made Miss Emily possessive, lonely and overly dependent. As a conclusion, Miss Emily has inner conflict with society that eventually led to her insanity. As the series progresses, Sam becomes more and more socially withdrawn, another early sign of schizophrenia. His brother becomes his only constant interaction with people. Often in the show he is seen drinking to excess, becoming drunk and sometimes passing out. In many different episodes he stays awake, passing off on sleep to read more on the demons he believes are after him and his rather, occasionally going off on his own to find enemies and kill them. A red flag warning sign of schizophrenia is extreme reaction to criticism, which Sam often experiences, particularly in regard to his father. In an early episode, Dean and Sam fight about carrying on the family business, as Sam believes it isn’t their responsibility and that their father consumed their life with that nonsense rather than allowing them to live normal lives. Dean then tells Sam how he is a coward and selfish, and Sam goes off into a rage, furious at the words of his brother. Whenever he is reprimanded or insulted in the show, he often goes off by himself in a state of anger, sometimes resorting to drinking as a means of getting his mind off of the problem. Sam also experiences suspiciousness that comes with his hallucinations/delusions. In a later episode he hallucinates that his brother is insulting him and telling him how Sam how he hates him along with blaming him for their father’s death, but then after coming back to reality he sees that his brother didn’t actually say these things, although he carries the suspicion that he truly feels that way bout him. The most apparent sign of schizophrenia in Sam appears to be his lack of emotion and having a flat expressionless gaze in the later seasons. He becomes detached to his brother, as nearing the last few seasons they have had problems and gone their separate ways many times. He develops resentment towards Dean, still holding on to his dream of living a normal life, so when they do finally come back together he states that it will only be for that time being until the problem at hand is solved. Tennis Player Development There are many ways my performance in tennis increased after joining the tennis class. The tennis class gave an insight on strategy, different strokes, serve, and different types of game situations. All of these items are key factors in winning a tennis game with great ease. The class didn't just inform us of these factors, but it made the students in force them. Practicing the factors made us understand more about them and their important properties. There are many differences between a game played in the beginning of the semester and a game played in the end of the semester. There are faster, bigger, more potent shots used in the game. The games are played more smoothly and have a quicker pace. The reason the games run more smoothly is because many students finally understood the strategy of the game. The strategy is an important factor in tennis because it tells you how to put the ball away. My doubles game was effected more than my singles game. We were taught to rush to the net during a doubles match and volley the ball away. This aggressive method puts pressure on the opponent to make unforced errors or allows you the opportunity to put away the ball with great ease. In the singles game, the class taught us to hit the ball deep. This is done so it is hard for an opponent to put away the ball. Also, I learned the "Serve and Volley" method. I wait till a serve is fast and then rush to the net and volley the ball to the corner. My opponent would be all the way back near the service line so he/she would be unable to return it. With basketball and football, strategy is not such an important part of the game unlike tennis. Strategy can help you win important points and help you win the game. Another component to win games is the consistency of the strokes and to know which strokes can help you the most. We learned the forehand the first day of school and became my most valuable weapon. The forehand is the stroke I use to put away the ball or to hit the ball nice and deep where it is difficult for my opponent to return the ball. Before this class I use to run around my backhand. But now instead of running around my backhand I am able to hit it back with some force. Still, my backhand can't put away the ball, but I am able to hit the ball deep. I am able to save some time and get ready to put away the next ball. My volley has improved significantly because I am able to use more angles when I hit the ball. This lets me win easy points during the game with little or no effort. Like me, my opponents have improved their game, so when I come to the net, they easily lob the ball over my head. This is when I use the overhead I learned in the tennis class. With the overhead, I am able to get high speed very easily and I am able to put away the ball. The serve is the biggest difference in my game, because it has gotten more consistent. Unfortunately my serve has dropped in speed for some reason, but I think that is because of not enough practice. But since I am able to place the ball so well, the speed of the ball does not matter. I have become so confident with my first serve that sometimes I use my fast serve during my second serve. I have also found that since I have acquired my new serve I have been winning matches faster. In the last tournament, I won the game in half-hour time period. The serve also makes me less exhausted during the game because I don't have to run for the ball. Another way I learned to conserve my energy is to play differently during certain games. I have learned when your opponent hits the ball with lots of power you should never put away the ball. Instead, you should keep rallying with your opponent until he/she get tired. In order to guide the lives of the Israelites, God provided the Israelites with a set of rules. These rules were in the form of the Ten Commandments, which were to guide them. The rules were given to Moses at Mount Sinai. Other religious practices that the Jews were expected to adhere to were the sacrifices and prayer at the altar of sacrifice, sacred tree or stone pillar. Sacrifices were meant for retaining a strong relationship with God through recognizing His authority and influence over their lives. This story is about Engineer Adil Salim, who is killed in revenge for his murder of a bedouin man, Mubarak bin Rabia. Adil is a proud man who has a big ego. He thinks of himself being intelligent because he is educated as an engineer. He makes the false overture of drawing attention to himself by his blatant courtship of a beautiful bedouin girl named Salma. He is watched and recognized as the murderer of Mubarak. The bedouins plot their vengeance craftily. They are above reproach as they use the girl, Salma, as bait to ensnare Adil. Adil falls into their trap and is killed. Adil is a victim of his own carelessness, ego, lust, stupidity and trusting nature. Cairo Is a Small City uses an omniscient narrator. This essay uses these two short stories to compare the similarities on how trust is betrayed. The essay takes the position that the two victims, Gregory and Adil, deserve to die, because of the fault of gullible trust in their personal characters. Adil trusted in the shopkeeper's strategy of befriending the woman because he saw that it worked. Gorgy and the omniscient narrator want to blame the shopkeeper for showing Adil the flirtatious method of bartering for the woman's affections. The narration says; '...had it not been for that day, Adil's mind would not have given birth to the plan he was determined, whatever the cost, to put through, because of that woman who had bewitched his heart.' (Hirschberg & Hirschberg 24). Adil does not question the consequences if the trust goes wrong. He is gullible and the fault is his alone. Adil trusted in his own bravery. The evidence that supports this argument is in the narration; ''As every man, according to Adil's philosophy of life, had within him a devil, it was sometimes better to follow this devil in order to placate him and avoid his tyranny.' (Hirschberg & Hirschberg 24). When Salma's father asks Adil many questions, alarm bells started ringing in his head but Adil chooses to ign ore the feeling that something might be wrong. Instead, Adil sweeps the feeling of misgiving away. The narrator says; 'Though Adil noticed in the father's tone something more than curiosity, he attributed this to the nature of the bedouin and their traditions.' (Hirschberg & Hirschberg 27). Adil makes the mistake of taking the interrogation lightly. He places complete trust in Salma and her father who have invited him to their home. It is his mistake. The Private Choice Think of all the notable people you may consider as highly educated. If you look deep enough, chances are you can find out about their education, which is often private. Why do some people prefer a private education? What even classifies as a private school? One definition given by the Encyclopedia of American Education is â€Å"in modern American education, any school not operated or directly funded by a governmental agency† (793); these include religious, non-sectarian, military, postgraduate, and special education schools. Private Education is beneficial because it provides specialized programs, presents higher standards, includes more involvement of the parents or guardians, and may soon be available to more people through government vouchers. Private institutions are wonderful for those pursuing a specific field of education. A child who has a goal of becoming a scientist will learn more about that career choice at a school that emphasizes science than if they were to only take the classes offered through their local high school. There is only so much that can be taught in the public setting that still maintains the attention of the majority of the students in the class. In his book Choosing Equality, Joseph H. Viteritti states that â€Å"private school curricula offer students a narrower range of educational options and are more focused on academic, as opposed to vocational, subjects† (81). With the help of the more concentrated learning in a specific area, the students may even get through school faster and on to better things. I think that it is a great option for those who do not want to waste their time doing things in school that they deem meaningless. In addition, some privat... ...eir autonomy†¦[and] are unlikely to participate in a voucher program that would require them to meet accountability standards in [certain] areas† (Liberator 2). These opposing views are primarily why the issue is still in debate. Whether you were privately educated or attended a public school, you still were able to obtain an education. Private schools often offer opportunities that you may not be able to find in every public school. Some individuals are quite satisfied with their local public school and find nothing wrong with their child being taught there. For those who can afford it (unless the voucher option ever passes), they choose to take advantage of everything private institutions have to offer, from a better quality staff and atmosphere to more in-depth studies to more satisfaction on the parents’ part. It is all a matter of personal choice.
